In yesterday's WCS press briefing Dr. K. Srinivasan Cheif Scientist of National Climate & Meteorological Monitoring Agency reported that the lockdown will continue for another year as the heatwave and dust storms might extend till the winters this year. The temperatures are going to stay within 55-58°C during this time and it will stay unsafe getting out in the open. The Ministry of Commerce is bolstering the delivery services to cover all of the population so that no one has to come out in the open.

Commerce Minister Anita Lal, said "We are dispatching more smartphones in the rural areas to make these delivery services accessible to all. Additionally we are making efforts to improve the situation in rural areas as they have suffered the most with droughts, increased farming costs due to cooling mechanisation and its limited access to farmers. Our best minds are working to prepare us for the new lockdown so that the implementation is better than the last year."

With much of the country gripped by heatwaves and drought, and low rainfall for the last 6 years the ground is losing moisture causing rapid vegetation loss. This is further exacerbated by urban heat island effect in the cities due to the air conditioners and HVAC systems. Currently the lockdown seems to be the only safe option until we find alternative solutions.
